If you’re using an HP PageWide XL printer, you may encounter an issue where the printer stops due to expired ink cartridges, even though there’s still ink left. In this post, we’ll cover how to keep your printer running smoothly by overriding these expired ink warnings.
Note: The following models are not affected by this issue: HP PageWide XL 3900, 4000, 4100, 5000, 5100, 6000, and 8000. However, for other compatible models, follow these steps.
Symptoms:
- The printer halts with a red “X” on the ink cartridges.
- A warning message states that the printer is “Out of Supplies” or can’t continue due to expired ink.
Cause:
Newer firmware versions require user confirmation to use expired inks, especially after a firmware update.
Solution:
- Reseat the Ink Cartridges:
- Open the ink compartment and remove each cartridge with a red “X.”
- Reinsert them firmly. A message will appear about expired inks. Press “OK” to accept that expired inks may not guarantee print quality, though most users don’t notice any change.
- Manage the Job Queue:
- After reseating the cartridges, the red “X” should turn into a yellow warning symbol.
- If any print jobs were interrupted, access the job queue screen and manually resume them.
Subsequent Printing:
You won’t be prompted again about the expired inks unless you remove and reinsert the cartridges.
HP has assured users that expired inks won’t damage the printer or noticeably affect print quality in most cases. For users whose printers are out of warranty, continuing with expired inks shouldn’t impact coverage.
